Attacks on the Israeli military and civilian targets by Hamas since Saturday, including the taking of hostages and relocating them back to Gaza, represent a profound change in the regional environment that has shocked observers.

Israel has suffered a devastating intelligence and military failure. The prospect of a three-front conflict, involving Hezbollah and militants in the West Bank, cannot be ruled out – and would run the risk of a further regional escalation involving the United States and Iran. Beyond the immediate term, the invasion raises new questions about the viability of the Palestinian Authority, the composition of the Israeli government and its relations with neighbouring states and more distant powers.
