Gulf geopolitics in flux

Geopolitics in the Gulf region has surprised observers this year, with China emerging as a mediator between Iran and its Gulf Arab neighbours, leading to the restoration of diplomatic relations between Tehran and Riyadh and fanning hopes for peace in Yemen.

This breakthrough raises a host of questions about the regional role of the United States, the prospects for progress in Iranian-Gulf ties, the influence of Russia and China, and whether there is any impact on the prospects of tensions between Iran, Israel and the United States tipping into direct armed conflict.

Join Oxford Analytica’s conference call on June 21, where our experts will consider:

  • What does the agreement portend for Gulf state foreign policies and external-power engagement in the region?
  • Could it change trade and investment within the region and alter its connections with the rest of the world?
  • Does the deal have any impact on the prospects for an armed conflict over Iran’s nuclear programme?

Speakers

 A discussion between:

  • David Butter, analyst of politics, economics and business in the MENA region, and has been an associate fellow at Chatham House since August 2012.
  • Jacopo Scita, policy fellow at the Bourse & Bazaar Foundation, focusing on Chinese ties with the Middle East and Central Asia.
  • Aniseh Bassiri Tabrizi, senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, focusing on Middle East security and geopolitics.

Chair: Nick Redman, Director of Analysis
