A statement from Oxford Analytica’s Director of Analysis, Nick Redman.

It is with enormous sadness that I have to tell you that our senior Russia/CIS analyst, John MacLeod, passed away suddenly this week.

John joined Oxford Analytica in 2016; he was an exceptional analyst and was a much-loved and admired colleague. His professional life was spent studying the culture, history and languages of Russia and the former Soviet Union, as well as their politics and economics; and in using that knowledge to help others understand it. Specialising in Russia and the former Soviet Union, he helped Oxford Analytica’s clients navigate the complex paradigm of an evolving Russia at home and around the world.

John had a storied career that was marked by intellectual prowess, as well as a deep commitment to policy analysis, journalism and human rights. Prior to joining Oxford Analytica, he was managing editor at the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, directed democracy and human rights initiatives for the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, and had also worked as a Russia and Central Asia analyst, linguist and news editor for organisations including Human Rights Watch and the BBC World Service.

It has been an enormous privilege to work with John and to learn from him, and he will be greatly missed at Oxford Analytica by his colleagues, contributors and clients. We send our deepest condolences to John’s family.
