Summary

Challenge: engendering partnerships between police and civil society

Outcome: the police found our input helpful, and we are discussing how we can best support them as they move forward

Description

We took part in a round-table discussion entitled “Transforming the Police: Towards Ethical Policing” held at the Royal Lake Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Initiated by Tunku Abdul Aziz bin Aziz and hosted by the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI) and Social Care Foundation, the discussion welcomed some forty-plus delegates to discuss the future of police enhancement in Malaysia. Delegates included representatives from the Royal Malaysian Police, international embassies, non-government organisations, the media, business, and legal professions.

The delegates heard from Catherine Young, Director of The Oxford Analytica Foundation, and Dr. Matthew Bostrom, formerly a Sherriff in the United States police force, as well as from Malaysian experts, including Tan Sri Datuk Robert Phang and Tun Mohammed Hanif Omar.

The discussion was well-received by the delegates, particularly the police representatives, and we are currently talking to the Royal Malaysian Police about how we might advise them in future.
