Western elections in 2025: The rotation of power

2024 was a bad year for governments in Western democracies, as electorates punished them for cost-of-living pressures. 2025 promises to be an equally challenging year for incumbents going to the polls, notably in Germany, Canada and Australia.

In many Western states, voters rejected governments that had overseen record-high inflation which eroded living standards and prompted monetary tightening that squeezed GDP growth. In Europe, hard-right parties were particular beneficiaries and their momentum shows little sign of stalling.

Join Oxford Analytica’s conference call on January 15, where our experts will consider:

  • The coalition permutations for Germany and what their potential impact will be for federal government policy.
  • The factors that will determine the timing of Canada’s election and the policy changes a new government might offer.
  • Whether Australia might buck the trend of incumbent defeat seen since 2022.
