Taiwan’s tests

Taiwan’s January 13 elections will be closely watched in Beijing and Washington, with the ruling, pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) seeking an unprecedented third consecutive presidential term in a three-way race taking place in the shadow of heightened US-China tension.

The outcome of presidential and legislative polls will have a direct bearing on Taiwan’s relations with China and the United States, as well as the policy outlook for Asia’s sixth-largest economy and the global technology leader on semiconductor manufacturing. Given Beijing’s longstanding hostility to the DPP, victory for that party could heighten cross-Strait military tensions.

Join Oxford Analytica’s conference call on January 17, where our experts will consider:

  • The major issues that determined the election
  • The future of the Kuomintang and what that means for Beijing’s aspirations
  • Economic and defence/security policy under the new government
  • How Beijing and Washington are likely to treat the new government

A discussion between:

Rana Mitter, Professor of US-Asia Relations, Harvard University and Oxford Analytica Region Head
Min-Hua Chiang, Non-Resident Fellow at the Taiwan Studies Programme, Nottingham University

Chair: Nick Redman, Director of Analysis
