‘Global Horizons’ Takeaways: regional reactions to US foreign policy

2025-10-GH-Takeaways-Social_1080

Since President Trump returned to office in January, US foreign policy has been marked by its high pace of activity, featuring both deal-making and disruption. In the process, the geopolitical and economic trajectories of key regions have either been reshaped or cast under a cloud of uncertainty.  In the Middle East, Washington participated in Israeli airstrikes on Iran but also turned its energies to a ceasefire in Gaza. In Latin America, military tensions with Venezuela and a spat with Brazil have been accompanied by more pragmatic dealings with Mexico. In South and South-east Asia, relations with India have turned frosty and ASEAN’s confidence in the reliability of the US as a security and trade partner have been shaken.

Drawing in part on insights generated by Oxford Analytica’s ‘Global Horizons’ conference, this webinar will examine how key regional actors are responding to Trump’s foreign policy and assessing their strategic options for the future:

  • How have countries in Latin America, the Middle East, South Asia and South-east Asia been affected by US foreign policy?
  • As they assess and seek to defend their interests, what will be the likely future pattern of resistance to and accommodation with Washington?
  • As these regional dynamics unfold, what opportunities do other major external powers like China see for themselves?
