Post-Assad Syria: Where to next?
In a stunning turn of events and nearly 14 years after the start of the Syrian civil war, rebels have ousted President Bashar al-Assad from power. The rebels, headed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a movement with salafist-jihadist roots, seem to be putting together the groundwork for a transitional phase, while moving to consolidate and expand territorial control. However, Syria’s future is fraught with challenges, with real fears of renewed violence, fragmentation and more authoritarianism, but with a religious flavour.
Meanwhile, Russia and Iran are left in a difficult position, and they will struggle to navigate the loss of a key ally. For other regional countries, and especially Turkey, the next phase will usher in new possibilities and opportunities.
