Headline risk

There was a slight increase in the risk of a US strike on Iran. A senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has described as acceptable "in principle" the incentives package, which the Permanent Five UN Security Council members plus Germany recently presented to Tehran to defuse the nuclear crisis. Former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati also said it was "expedient" for Iran to resume negotiations on the offer. Nonetheless, increasingly fierce rhetoric from some US and Israeli quarters on Iran may further spur Tehran's nuclear efforts.
