The risk has increased of deep recession in the United States. While durable goods orders jumped 5.2% month-on-month in December, as the weak dollar helped prop up overseas demand, the outlook for the consumer economy still appears very weak. Moreover, the increasing precariousness of large bond insurers -- 'monolines' -- points towards rising systemic risk.
