EVENT:
On March 5, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government unveiled its first budget.
SIGNIFICANCE:
Faced with widening fiscal and current account deficits, the NDC had no choice but to rein in public expenditure. However, the spending reduction targets are ambitious, will be difficult to achieve, and presage a turbulent period until oil revenues begin to arrive towards the end of 2010.
