EVENT:
NASA yesterday announced that it has signed a deal
which means that the space shuttle programme will be largely
operated by United Space Alliance, a private contractor.
SIGNIFICANCE:
The contract is partly designed to reduce the
government's role in day-to-day running of the space agency,
but is also impelled by the agency's need to cut costs.
Current plans call for a sharp decline in NASA funding for the
three years after 1997, but the agency is hoping that recent
events, including publication of a new National Space Policy,
will help reverse at least some of the cuts.
