EVENT: The Independent Commission on Turkey criticised on September 7 the continued delay in EU accession talks.

SIGNIFICANCE: EU member states are showing serious signs of 'enlargement fatigue'. Support for further enlargement -- both among citizens and leaders in many EU member states -- is at a low ebb. Movement on enlargement is stalling, with little progress in accession talks with Turkey and Macedonia or in talks with other potential candidates waiting in the wings such as Serbia, Montenegro, Albania or Ukraine.
