EVENT:
Over eleven metric tons (mt) of cannabis resin coming from Morocco were seized in Antwerp on August 17.
SIGNIFICANCE:
The find, with a street value of over 67 million dollars, represented about 1% of Morocco's annual production. It came as Morocco, which accounts for 80% of the cannabis resin (hashish) consumed in Europe, highlights its own efforts at controlling cannabis cultivation. While cultivation has decreased significantly and enforcement improved in recent years, a long-term solution to replacing the crop in the northern Rif region -- the source of almost all Moroccan cannabis -- remains elusive.
