EVENT:
Tomorrow's Russo-Ukrainian summit agenda includes the issue of the breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria.
SIGNIFICANCE:
In his victory speech after his re-election, Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov confirmed his intention to pursue a fully independent state. While there are precedents for such calls, the persistence of these demands since the September independence referendum are unique. They are at odds with the stated policies of Transnistria's main supporter, Russia, and will further complicate important international year-end negotiations.
