EVENT: Russian President Vladimir Putin said in Paris on September 22 that Russia respected Moldovan territorial integrity.

SIGNIFICANCE: He was answering reporters asking whether Moscow acknowledged the referendum in the self-styled Moldovan Republic of Pridnestrovie (Transnistria) on independence from Moldova and accession to Russia, which has been ignored internationally. With Georgia's breakaway republic of South Ossetia holding its own referendum in November, the separatist regimes in the former Soviet Union are on the rise, with Moscow supporting them.
