US-Iranian tensions: Towards a military confrontation?
Thursday 1st February, 2007
16:00 GMT / 11:00 EST
Agenda forthcoming
US-Iranian tensions over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and expanding influence in Iraq continue to increase, leading some analysts to conclude that Washington may be prepared to resort to force as the 'least bad' policy option.
However, Washington and Tehran have profound political, military and economic incentives to avoid military confrontation -- particularly in the near term. The conference call will analyse these issues, including:
- the progress of Iran’s drive to acquire nuclear technology;
- the chaotic situation in Iraq, and its influence on US policy towards Iran
- Israel’s influence on US policy, and its own strategic calculus
- the influence of domestic and international political setbacks suffered by the administration and the Iranian regime
- the attitudes of other Gulf states towards Iran’s regional influence and nuclear ambitions; and
- the strategy behind US naval policy in the Gulf.
