China’s Growing Global Diplomatic Muscle

Chinese diplomacy is expanding its reach, as Beijing feels compelled to exploit its growing influence in world affairs. It has spent almost three decades concentrating on economic reform, directing foreign policy to developing friendly relationships overseas and to preventing the established powers from containing China’s expansion. It felt that its interests were best served by a stable international environment and it stuck to a consistent policy of non-intervention.

However, the non-intervention policy is now colliding with new realities, as Beijing is drawn into issues such as Israel-Palestine. China has thus reached a stage in its development that makes more demands of its diplomats, who are now tasked with exploiting Beijing’s good relations abroad to guarantee China’s economic and territorial security. President Hu Jintao has been particularly active in helping to cement new relationships since taking office in 2003.
