Jens Tholstrup

Director of Consulting
Joined Oxford Analytica in 2000. Member of the Management Team and responsible for Business and Financial Markets coverage. Director of the Consulting Practice. Acts as project advisor for a number of major projects in the financial sector and for financial sector clients. Prior to joining Oxford Analytica, he worked in Investment Banking in London and Tokyo for over 20 years. Principal focus on capital markets, leveraged finance and corporate finance with a particular focus on financial institutions. From 1976-80, Jens Tholstrup was an Associate with Credit Suisse White Weld (now CSFB); from 1980-83 he was Manager, Hill Samuel & Co.; and, from 1983-2000, Executive Director, SG Warburg/UBS Warburg. Mr Tholstrup holds a BA (Hons) in PPE from St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford. He is fluent in Danish, German and English.

Rhiannon Alexander

Analyst
Previous work experience includes coordinator at the Middle East Academic Development Department of a group of international schools, and has been involved in development and education programmes for charities, NGOs and peace groups both in the UK and abroad. Speaks Arabic, and has spent considerable time in the Middle East. BA Hons (2002) in French from New College, Oxford, with third-year publishing internship in Paris.

Dr Giles Alston

Senior Consultant
Giles has been a part of Oxford Analytica as an employee or contributor for twenty years.  As an editor for the Daily Brief he has worked on the North America Desk; as a contributor, he continues to write for the Daily Brief on technology and regulatory issues; and now in the Consulting Practice he is responsible for quality control.  Based in the New York office, he has handled three of the company’s main joint venture projects, including its relationship with the New York Times. D.Phil in International Relations, St Anthony’s College, University of Oxford.

Elizabeth Barker

Consultant
Recent projects at Oxford Analytica have included managing assessments of twenty-seven emerging market countries against internationally recognised standards in fiscal and monetary policy transparency, managing quarterly reports on global risks and opportunities for a global financial services provider, and assessing labour migration programmes.   Previous work experience in international development, specifically South Asia.  B.A. in Economics (2001), University of Cambridge and M.Sc. in Economics for Development (2004), University of Oxford.

Kerry Boyd Anderson

Consultant
Based in the Washington, DC office, recent projects have included a strategic review of a Gulf state financial sector, a study on Iranian power structures, a conference on self-starter terrorist cells in Europe, and analysis of global perceptions of the United States. Prior to joining Oxford Analytica, Kerry worked in Washington, DC, covering issues related to weapons of mass destruction and terrorism. She has also conducted field research on Palestinian democratisation and Middle East security issues. MSc in International Relations (2004), London School of Economics and Political Science. BA in Global Studies (2000), University of Iowa.

Mark Elsner

Senior Consultant
Based at Oxford Analytica’s Washington, DC office, recent projects have included a 10-year outlook for the oil price, and a 5-year scenario for global trade. He is a regular contributor to the Oxford Analytica Daily Brief, on the international economy and Latin America, particularly Colombia and Venezuela. Prior to joining Oxford Analytica, Mark worked as a strategy consultant in London, Paris and Berlin and also undertook internships at the World Bank and SAP AG. MPhil in Economics (2000), Christ Church, University of Oxford. MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (1998), Christ Church, University of Oxford.

Nicola Garbarino

Since joining Oxford Analytica, Nicola has worked on projects on international finance. He previously worked as investment manager in the private equity team at Allianz and as an economic consultant at Oxera, focussing on pensions reform and financial services regulation. MSc in Economics (1999), University of Bologna and MA in International Relations (2005), Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, Washington DC.

Juan Garin

Head of Strategic and Future Analysis

Joined Oxford Analytica in 2000. He has overseen and managed dozens of consulting engagements that support strategy formulation through the provision of political and economic analysis for both government and business. He specialises in applying tools such as scenario planning and stakeholder analysis to addressing the relationship between politics, policy and business.  He is also an Associate Fellow at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, where he lectures in the MBA programme on managing business-state relations and international political risk. Previously, he worked as a project manager and consulting engineer on numerous large engineering projects in North America and Asia. Graduate of Hertford College, University of Oxford (MBA, 1999) and Beng, Concordia University, Montreal.

Olivia Hamill

Consultant
Previous work includes research on nuclear proliferation and peace processes in South Asia for the International Institute for Strategic Studies (London) and political risk consulting for the Scowcroft Group (Washington, DC). She has also worked for an NGO in Madagascar, on peacebuilding issues for International Alert (London) and managed a project for the United Nations Human Security Unit (Paris, New York, Delhi). Olivia has had several published articles in the newspaper El Pais (Madrid). She speaks fluent English, French, Spanish and Italian. Regional interests include South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. BA in Political and Moral Philosophy (2004) from Université La Sorbonne and MA in International Affairs (2006) from Sciences-Po Paris.

Holly Hetherington

Consultant
Recent project work includes the comprehensive assessment of innovation systems in China and India and the development of a country risk index, which monitors political and economic risks in 40 countries on a quarterly basis. She speaks fluent Mandarin and has spent extensive time in mainland China. MA in Chinese Studies (2004), School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. BA in East Asian Studies (2002), Princeton University.

Beth Kreling

Recent projects for Oxford Analytica include extensive market research of the Indian energy sector and analysis of political and economic developments in India. Previously assisted with the organisation of Oxford Analytica’s annual International Conference. Previous work experience includes research for the Toronto based G8 Research Group, for media information provider The Profile Group and two years in the book publishing industry working in both editorial and English language rights management for Pavilion and Collins & Brown. MA International Relations from Kings College, London, and MA English Literature from Peterhouse, University of Cambridge.

Eva Natali

Consultant
Recent projects have included managing an extensive analysis of factors affecting the spread of HIV in 18 countries, constructing an index on labour migration policy, and preparing assessments of 27 emerging market countries against internationally recognised standards of transparency. Prior to joining Oxford Analytica, Eva worked at the World Bank in Washington DC, covering issues related to poverty reduction strategies and aid effectiveness, as well as the Center for Strategic and International Studies, analysing the implications of global ageing trends in developed economies. She also worked in the Multilateral Political Affairs and Human Rights General Directorate of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. BA in Political Science (2002), LUISS Guido Carli University of Rome and MA in International Relations (2004), Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, Washington DC.

Daniel Russell

Recent projects include market entry studies, with specific focus on India. Before joining Oxford Analytica, Daniel Russell worked at The Hindu newspaper in India and as a researcher for online financial broadcaster Cantos in London. He was also Asia Pacific Editor at Oxford Analytica. Brought up and educated in India. Masters in South Asian History from the University of Oxford. BA in History and Politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Sam Wilkin

Currently responsible for political and country risk at Oxford Analytica. Previous work experience includes: Founder and Editor in Chief of Countryrisk.com; Country Risk Adviser and US Head of Political Risk Consulting with Aon Corporation; and Director of Country Analysis with Marvin Zonis & Associates, Chicago. Co-author of “The Kimchi Matters: Global Business and Local Politics in a Crisis-Driven World” (Agate, 2003) and editor of “Country and Political Risk: Practical Insights for Global Finance” (Risk Books, 2004). M.A. in International Relations from the University of Chicago and B.A. in Economics from Eckerd College.

Mike Wood

Consultant
Mike manages the Global Stress Point Matrix at Oxford Analytica – an early warning system designed to monitor future risks. Mike is an international finance executive with 15 years experience of investment and financial management in emerging markets. He holds a FCA (Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). Previously, Mike held a number of different positions in management and finance, including acting as Regional Manager for West Africa for CDC/Actis and subsequently as New Business Director for CDC Assets in Central and South America. More recently, he co-founded a web-based company distributing digital content to portable devices such as iPods and mobile phones as well as an intellectual property practice.

Janika Albers

Previous experience includes a position at an academic quarterly for international politics and legal research in Cameroon. Also developed an assessment of human rights institutions worldwide for the National Human Rights Commission of Korea. Particular interests include Brazil and monetary economics. BA in Philosophy and Economics (2004) from the University of Bayreuth, Germany, and MA in International Relations and Quantitative Methods of International Economics (2007), Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, Washington DC. Has also studied in Brazil and Italy. Speaks German, French and Portuguese.
